I have been working on the twelve Caesars for a long time. I still have the rare ones to go. I'd like an official coin and a fourree of them all. I am also working on all the emperors and their wives and families all the way until the end of the Byzantine empire. I have lots left to go, which is part of the fun. I could also see doing all the emperors who struck coins at Alexandria, because it is such a cool series. All you really bad people have really gotten me interested in the Republic as well. Its all good as long as you enjoy it. I don't want to ever be "done".
I like the idea of pairing each one with a fouree. This would be an interesting pursuit. I thought of a "one each" approach, but I must say I really like the focus I have. I am another who will never be done. There is so much variety available in a 12 caesars collection. Not only is it a fascinating and formative period of history, but the characters are inspiring, disgusting, horrible, enlightened, avaricious, gluttonous, backstabbing, capricious, thoughtful and not at all dull. I will keep upgrading my collection in the years to come and I will also buy whatever else interests me at the time. Thanks for the interesting post.
Yup! Oh if you didn't like or appreciate my joke I'm sorry, but it was not directed at you or your "focus" but in any case.... ...have a tissue and move on .... bruh...
@Orfew I love your coins I couldn't possibly pick 12 coins. All my "reasonable" coins are my favourite as I hold them in my hand. I lack Otho to make up my 12 Caesars, but my Nero is so embarrassing, I can't bring myself to post it.
Thanks @Pishpash I really enjoy it when you post your coins. I have about thirty coins. I have expanded to the imperatorial period. As someone else posted, the imperatorial coins are a nice way to fill the gap between JC and Augustus because it was such a tumultuous and interesting period of history. I have a couple of M. Antonius coins but I am looking for coins of Brutus, Cassius, Lepidus, and a few other characters from that time. I have not found the right ones...yet, but I am in no hurry. As for Nero, I have 2 but still have not found the one I really want. I would like a pre-reform denarius with a young portrait. I really like the young portrait of Nero I have on my Claudius, but I would like one with him on his own. Please do not be embarrassed about your coin of Nero, I would still like to see it.
But your Caligula is very very nice. I have one of those Neros with the SALUS reverse but mine has a different obverse legend. I like the coin Bing, the portrait has lots of character.
@Orfew, you asked for it! It is absolutely horrible! It came in a lot and cost next to nothing, definitely need an upgrade at some point
I agree -- despite the condition of the coin's surface, Nero's portrait is well delineated and fairly artistic.
I never get tired of seeing that coin. Hopefully I will find one almost as nice soon. I have a dealer friend of mine looking for me.
OK. I said let recess begin. I did not know that I was going to have to put Noob in the corner for throwing his slurpie at the basketball team and getting some on Orfew. 12 Caesars at The Met
I love threads like these. Ancients are so much cooler than US stuff, especially at comparable price levels. My list is coming.
