All I can see is simple intellectual and professional laziness on the part of the US Mint. The rest of the world isn't so limited in their numismatic designs. Look at some of the coins the Coin Invest Trust is designing and issuing - particularly the Tiffany Art Coins (you can't find one and if you can, you probably can't afford it ) to see what the state of the numismatic art is capable of. Yeah, you're not going to do a production run of 125,000 of these - they issue 999 of each, no more - but from a CNC dimensional standpoint the Full Band on a Merc even at the size of the gold issue is trivial.
