    Hi,

My girlfriend just got back from Ireland and brought back a bunch of older Irish coins for me. (my first Irish coins!) I was just wondering if someone could tell me what the words on these coins pictured , translate to in english.

Tom,the denominations are in Erse (Irish-Gaelic).The word 'Pingin' is the Erse word for 'Penny'.The Irish 3d. is inscribed 'Leat Reul'.The word 'Leat' (or more correctly 'Leath') is the Erse word for 'Half'.The word 'Reul' has an unknown origin, but some linguists say it comes from the Castilian Spanish 'Real'.

The Erse language is very close to both Manx & Scots-Gaelic.

    Aidan.

Just so you know, the language on the coins is "Irish", or Gaelic or Irish Gaelic,
Erse is not the proper term, some might consider it offensive.

That's probably why AW uses it.

Dopeuser & hontonai,in Scotland,it is known as 'Erse',because the name 'Gaelic' is applied to the Scots-Gaelic language.Being of Scots descent myself,I prefer to use the term 'Erse'.

Aiden we know not like Irish, because he have many problem with them when child. They discussed much in forum of debates. At least it what he say. But he like of their coins apparentl.

So it not of surprise that he refer in not nice term. Like call a Scot a Scotch(drink) or Englishman Limey(not sure why but not nice.)
