I'm new to the whole coin collecting thing and right now all my coins are just sitting in the flips they came in. could anyone point me in the right direction of something to keep them in? Anyone made anything handmade? Thanks
I assume that you are referring to 2x2's. If so, you can purchase plastic pages that hold 20 2x2's per page and can be stored in a 3-ring binder. Another alternative is to purchase the red boxes for 2x2's. Chris
I use a mix of binders for my US and World Type Sets, Ziploc bags for bulk excess coins, and red/black boxes for my excess coins in 2x2s.
What can we do so people will know they are in the ancient section? Actually, years ago I kept ancients in that kind of album and even glued two pages together so the spaces would be thick enough for heftier ancients. In that day you could get such albums cheap or free from dealers who bought collections and removed key dates. Back then many people collected out of circulation so 95% of the coins in albums were worth face value. Shop owners would remove key dates and put the rest in the register. For small collections, I still like trays. When the collection grew too large, I moved to paper envelopes and look at photos 99% of the time.
How mine are stored, don't love it as when I get a new coin, I have to move X amount to make room for that one or 2 new. But other alternatives I havent been a fan of. I would really like it if 2x2 paper flips has a window like letter envelopes. And the Glassine for stamps suck, tired that too.
My coins are in 2X2 Saflips in a red box and in an Abafil case. Keep in mind that sometimes dealers will ship coins in the soft PVC flips. You do not want to keep your coins in those, they can degrade and negatively affect the coins. Saflips or equivalent flips are stiffer more brittle plastic but they will not harm the coins.
OH - hard to actually tell without some pictures. I never caught the forum was "ancient coins". Nothing was noted in his thread!!
If it's ancient coins, I put mine in 2X2's then put them in plastic pages with their attributions written on the cardboard. What @Seattlite said and showed!
I know, disgusting isn't it...now where is that emoticon with the little guy throwing up... I am green, not with verdigris, but with envy!
One time I visited a collector who got trays from England and had a case built for the trays. It was interesting enough that I took this photo: I think a place to insert a label on the forward edges would have made it much easier to find the right tray.
I store my collections (the valuable ones) in Abafil trays and cases. A few years ago I eventually built a case with a red leather covering, suitable for four Abafil trays, in which is currently the "top 80" of my roman coins collection Q
