I know little about Trade Dollars and wanted to see if you guys could help me out with some feedback of what you think. Haven't weighed but it passed the magnet test and from what I read both sides appear to match up as type 2? Legit coin? Grade?

    In that condition...probably OK.

Put the magnet away and the balance. ANY deceptive coin will not be attracted to one and its weight will be in tolerance. More useful for a novice is to look on the Internet for identical coins and compare the shape of the design elements.

Trade dollars are one of the most counterfeited of all the US coins. And as I suspect from your post, you already know this. That said, detecting a counterfeited trade dollar requires careful inspection and a thorough understanding of the hallmarks of a real vs. fake trade dollar.
So my next question is this - how much is this coin you're thinking of buying going to cost you? Is the purchase price significantly less than buying a graded version of the coin? Personally, until I fully understood a coin (ie -read the book), I would stick with a slabbed coin from a reputable dealer, even if it meant a paying a little more.

The Trade Dollar is merely one I recently acquired as a gift. I am into mainly Peace Dollars. Know next to nothing of Trade Dollars outside of how often they are counterfeit and are expensive.

if I was going to buy I would definitely do like you said and just buy a slabbed one.

Everything from the design matches up from what I see. I have read up on some of the key fake red flags in regards to design and it appears to pass the ones I read about

Looks ok to me, about EF40. Nice and crusty, and a good example of a T2/2.

Real as can be a nice crusty original of one of the more common dates. I'd call it vf 35

Looks like you got yourself a nice Trade Dollar . Heres a link to an article in the Gobrecht Journal , talking about some of the newer subtypes found in the past few years . It's a great read for anyone that loves Trade Dollar . Doc , I hope this helps you if you haven't read it already .

Nice find @rzage. Thanks. There is some information by the same writer on the Numismatic News site mentioning another article in the Gobrecht Journal plus the discovery of a "new" reverse hub.

Wouldn't have found it without your mentioning the article and another member showing where the Gobrecht journals were .
