i have in my posetion a nickel i found not 12 hours ago. this 1953 jefferson nickel appears, on the front, to be an ordinary san fansisco mint coin. once you turn it over you discover (if you are somewhat observant) that a small "s" rests on the ledge on monticello's right ledge. i tried some searching on google but became frustrated quickly, as i have found no mention of the afore mentioned "s". please help if you can.
I gues you lost me. How can it look like a SF coin from the front? On older nickels, the S would be where you describe. Not sure if they made S nickels that year, but based on your find, I would say they did, and that you have one.
thanks guys. i'm pretty much brand new at this thing. i was wondering also if any one knew some values on 1946 "s" mint with an "s" stamped on it.
It depends on the condition but if it is circulated its not worth much. Its better if you can scan the coin to give others an idea of its grade so they can give you a grade and price.
nickel_pickel53 1) Welcome to the forum. 2) The S is not 'stamped' on the reverse, it is part of the die, and is struck along with the rest of the coin. As far as value, it is not a lot, depending upon grade (condition) but is under $1.
