...but not of coins. i was in nashville TN last weekend and stopped in to see their scale model of the parthenon. it's pretty cool! located in a downtown park, it was orginally made in the late 1800s for the state centennial celebration. origianlly it was a termporary structure, made permanent in the 1930s or so. my wife took some pics on her phone.... the inside houses a small art display and museum of the history of the place....then there is the scale model of athena parthenos. she is awesome, over 40 feet high...nike is over 6 feet tall! that's me to give you an idea of scale! here's a close up of her shield... if your ever in the area, stop by and visit...well worth it! here's a coin i have that i recently reshot.....i think the reverse is the athena parthenos. if not, it's similar! i know some show her for sure (late athens tetradrachms and such. post your coins of athena parthenos or athena with nike. Mysia, City of Lampsacus, 190-85 BC O: Apollo, R: Athena holding Nike. 20 mm, 6.7 g
@chrsmat71 Thanks for posting that! I lived in Nashville for 10 years during the 80's and miss it! Been to the Pantheon a few times, but not since my living there. Loved that area!
That is beyond awesome Chris! The ancient Greeks would certainly be proud of this temple. Wish there was something like this in my area.
Here is an old thread bumped, but I’ve been in Nashville for the last few days and on the recommendation of @chrsmat71 in this thread and @Gavin Richardson in another my daughter and I visited The Parthenon which is pretty impressive. As stated above the Athena Parthenos statue is huge. Even my 12 year old daughter was astounded that Nike in Athenas hand measures 6 feet 4 inches tall. My favorite adornment seen was this Medusa gorgon from the massive bronze doors. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the travel tip and that this is a must see if you’re in Nashville.
Don't mean to be snarky, but I couldn't help wondering how long that statue will be allowed to remain standing before someone decides that it is blasphemous and tears it down.
