I then 'upgraded' to this one. (I removed the 'springy' soldering thing and the 'magic hands'.) This one has a Flexible LED 'stalk' and the magnifier is larger and easier to use. It takes three 'AA' batteries and it also has a USB cord as well. It costs around $10.00 and can be found on eBay at http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Desktop-...826358?hash=item1a135a2c36:g:2NkAAOSwWntXMvsj
A few years ago I bought a floor model medical magnifier and placed it by my desk. Works well for lighting and magnifying coins, lighting for my photography, and is easily accessible. I love it. Use it for my other serious hobbies too. Got it at Amazon for under $100 USD. Uses standard 8" Ring Florescent bulb, AC power. Best investment for my eyes! I am seriously thinking of getting another for my wife's crafting hobbies. Esthology Premium Magnifying Floor Lamp 5 Diopter w/ Rolling Base About the Product Complete multi-function magnifying lamp 360 degree swiveling head Five spoke base for additional stability Ideal for medical, dental, cosmetology, skin care or working with small-parts Smooth rolling magnifying floor lamp with light
Might try the Ott Lite series, the true color led light is great for older eyes like mine. I had a Michael's coupon and got mine for 60% off one day. They come in different styles.
I'm trying to imagine the look I'd get rolling into a coin show with a floor model AC lamp. I like Topcat's two suggestions but probably would remove the magnifier for field use since there are people who recognize me as the guy wearing two pairs of glasses. Thanks for all the suggestions. One thing I have learned about lights and light bulbs: Don't buy a large stock in advance. It seems that every day brings an improvement in color balance quality and a lower price point. The really lousy first generation compact fluorescent bulbs that I once thought were the state of the art are now jokes we wish would burn out so we can replace them with something costing half as much that is ten times as good. I wish my mind or body would be getting better at the speed of lights.
LOL, NO WAY would I take that to a show!!! I use it at home on guns and coins. Now that would be HILARIOUS to show up at a table with a rolling magnifier... show that Dealer you are a SERIOUS EXPERT collector (sadly, I am not...) I DO have a lighted hand magnifier that @John Anthony uses for portable magnifying!
I manufactured product for the Crafting Industry for several years... those were consided very nice lighting options! Good choice.
The 'tallest' it can be (straight up) is 14 inches, and the magnifying window is 1 and three quarter inches, although the 'sweet spot' is less. (The view on the other side of the window is exponential, of course.) I do prefer the 'black' one, over the 'white' one because the magnifyer (sweet spot) is larger. I hope this helps.
