I’ve been thinking of grading this but wanted some input. Would you acetone off the ink “1.5 duit” and do you think it would detail over the scratches on the reverse? DOMINICA: British Colony, AR 1½ bits (moco) (3.29g), ND [1772-89], KM-1, Pridmore-22, script "D" with rays and small star in the loop of the letter overstruck on crenated circular center plug of Spanish or Spanish Colonial 8 reales
I’m a little disappointed that nobody responded to an opinion question on a pretty cool coin. You didn’t need to have any technical knowledge of this coin, just offer an opinion. This kind of antipathy makes me stop posting which apparently doesn’t bother anybody so carry on.
Well then, a 'bump' is in order. I'm not familiar with what you have posted, but it is quite interesting in nature. Not sure if I would have it graded if the coin were in my possession. I think I'd more like to kind of hold her unfettered. Go Hokies!
It looks like someone wrote on the reverse. Here is mine: *Dominica, British Colony, Countermarked Coinage, 1 ½ Bits (Moco), ND (1798), NGC XF40, KM#1
I didn't see the original post or would have responded earlier. I would leave the ink but that's just me. It's a bit of the coin's history. From what I have been told, at one time it was relatively common to do this. I have a coin with what I have been told is an inventory mark. My thought is that would get a details grade for the scratches. I don't know that there would be a way to prove that they were there when it was minted.
Nice one. It was definitely written on but the unanswerable question is whether it was done in 1850, 1950 or 20 years ago. As @green18 suggested, I should probably just keep it as it is.
