What do you guys think of this Bust Half? I believe that this is an O-123. If so, it is a R-8. I verified the obverse as a Bar 8. But the reverse is very tough.
OKay guys and aals, here are the pictures of the O-103 Frank has, The files are rather large so give it a moment to load. Thanks for the pictures Treashunt. Ben
Thank you Ben, Now I just have to learn how to do that. Also, now that you have seen them what do you think of the Overton variety? Frank
What a typo, I just noticed that I originally headed this with the O-103. It is actually an O-123! I think. Check it out.
Frank, Sorry for the delay in helping with this. The horizontal dash bar to the left of the 1 in the date definitely make it an O.112 or an O.123, as those were the only two pairing to use Obverse 8. In the reverse of your half, it looks like the 5 in 50 C is higher than the 0, the base of the R in the motto is higher than the base of the I next to it, and it appear that the first A does have a recut right base. These are all reverse diagnostics for an O-123. Congratulations on this R7 rarity. I have the newer Parsley book that updates Overton a bit, and there is a note for this date that the marriage may be available in only proof or presentation specimen strikes, and that no known business strike specimens have been verified. This book is dated 2005, so that observation may be a bit outdated, but you still have found a wonderful and rare variety in my opinion. Nice find. :thumb:
Unfortunately, this coin isn't an o-123. the T-I alignment is wrong. The 123 has the right side of the I in line with the left side of the T and in the pictured coin the I and T are perfectly aligned strait up and down. I will work on this for a little bit and see if I can come up with the correct die marriage.
ok, I am 99% certain it is an o-112. The only way to be more certain would be to inspect it in hand to see if it has 2 very small die lumps between the 4th and 5th crossbars on the eagle's shield. nice coin!
Oh boy, I may be eating my words. The alignment of the I in the motto below the T does look more like a O-112, than the O-123 where the I is slightly to the left side of the T. What looks like part of a recut A really had me convinced on the O-123.....yikes.
