Hi everyone, I found this penny today while penny roll hunting...I notice on the back I could just barely see the " G " where " FG " is suppose to be...It is an older coin so I was thinking PMD, but curious cause looking around the surrounding area of where the FG should be, there is no damage there...You would think the higher areas of the coin would have been rubbed off before anything happening to the FG, but there is no damage at all that I can see, except the f is gone and the G is very faint... What do you think??
Of you're searching rolls, start looking at, iirc, whatever 69-Ds you may come across; partial/weak designer's initials were very common and stand as a good example of what you may be seeing here. With that said though, your coin is an earlier plated cent, which were often of very low quality, so small anomalies can have different causes. Either way though, such things are insignificant and once you learn what they are, not worth fussing over.
While many coins that have anomalies such as these, they usually do not have any or much resale value. BUT, all coins have value as a teaching aid for newbies including this one, and those with cracks, chips, die scratches, polishing marks, grease struck or other foreign matter strike through's, slightly off centers, misaligned dies, mixed alloy, minor doubled dies, plating blisters and many others. These help people sort the valuable from the less valuable and teach you important process's of mint production. And they teach you about man made post production non errors.
Whelp, then somebody needs to start teaching the fact they're not worth a fortune and are nothing special. Unfortunately, the concept appears to be understood by relative few....
Well thanks everyone...I guess I learned something here....Boy....It sure is tough being a "NewBee"....!!....Thanks for your help!
