OMG! I hope that columnist who wrote about coin forums in Numismatic News does not see this! Bullion? We'll all be in the paper again.
My advice to you is to run... The coin looks terminal to me. It may very well be possible to remove some of the residue on the surface (I don't have much optimism but it wouldn't be the first time I have seen a coin clean up nicer than I anticipated), but you have no idea what is under it. You could make the coin look worse. Assuming that this coin was already yours and you wanted to play (i.e. you accept that the coin may look worse and are okay with that possibility), I would do multiple rinses in acetone which still might not remove the stain but it would be worth a shot. If that doesn't work I'd try a light dip, and then attempt to darken the surfaces to make them look closer to what would be expected for the issue. In any event, I don't think the coin would or should ever straight grade.
Thank you all for your advice. It just gets so *frustrating*... Draped Bust dollars are hard enough to find as it is (at least in grades I can afford... AG/G or so). And "Good" coins are well over $1k. So when I see problem coins, I am tempted. It *does* have nice details, and I'm sure it appeals to some folks. The price (which I won't disclose) is a good bit less than a problem-free coin in the same grade. I will continue to hunt. Thanks again.
Glad to hear you are going to pass on this one, it looks terrible. Don't give up. sooner or later you will find one AG or G that has not been messed up and you will be happy. And don't forget that if down the road finances improve and you want to upgrade a problem free example is waaaay easier to sell.
It's terminal. Worth $100, maybe $150 tops, but people will continue paying hundreds of dollars for these no matter how damaged they are.
I dare you to find a draped bust dollar of any condition for that price. You may as well join the crowd that says it is only worth melt.
It's an 1802/1; I think BB 234, an R2; a G-4 is valued at about 1200 this coin has Fine details ; I think even with the issues 250- 300 is not unreasonable.
You gotta see @Treashunt at work.......I saw him pick up a lovely Bustie (local show) at way under $100.......
I'm not sure what some of you are using as your price guides, but $10, $100? That's just crazy. That being said, I would look a bit further if you're just looking for a type piece. Plenty of details coins are out there with a good look to them for decent money.
There's a Seated Dime on the Bay right now going for $113 that's UNC details with obverse damage, but all there is is a small scratch. Would you buy something like that? I would, considering the rest of the coin has a lot of eye appeal. With a coin like this, there's isn't much eye appeal.
About 10 years ago I bought a beautiful original vf 1800 with original surfaces for $100. Had one problem. Some IDIOT tried to change the last 0 to a 4. I'd love to get this restored someday but for the money I can't lose
