Cyprus/ Salamis Evagoras 411-373BC AV 1/10 Stater ND 0.71g. 8mm. 12h Salamis Mint Bearded Herakles in Lionskin Headdress R Man Headed Goat with Long Horns/ Beard R
It was brutal, as always- even negative publicity didn’t have an impact on crazy prices: i had 3 on my list and lost all 3
Roma seems to have taken top spot in ancients/ their catalogues are beautifully laid out/ their service is top notch/ even the shipping display boxes are cute. The problem is that the every collector out there/ follows supply and demand/ in ancients/ the tiny supply can never satisfy the huge demand out there. I won that Salamis AV 1/10 Stater for 1200 (less then 10 known) the other coin was 950 UK pounds/ unpublished. Imagine prices for same rarity in US coins/ you would be in high six figures. My feeling is that Ancients/ World prices have just begun to escalate/ prices in 5 years may be double todays.
Since/ past 100 years prices of all coins have gone up 100 fold or way more. In the US/ collectors drove up prices even more. Now/ that more and more people have extra $$$ to spend on extras/ much of this money is going into "collectibles" I find "high quality"+ "eye appeal" + "rarity" + "worry about inflation/ currency debasement" +"low supply vs demand" has created the perfect storm for prices going to insane levels in the foreseeable future. Another contributing factor/ coins are a great investment.
i think 3 major contributing factors to have successful investment here: 1. Buy low 2. Quality 3. Eye appeal Without each other, the combo might not work
Unfortunately/ coin prices will never come down/ only up The modern stuff will stay stagnant/ since the "modern" designs are boring/ classic coinage will always be in high demand.
Update/ after DAY-2 / I won a total of five new additions Seemed one you got into the World section/ which was bedtime in Europe/ the frenzy ended and left me to win three extra coins.
