So wouldn't ya know it. Been going to the LCS for the last year once a month looking for a few select coins, the one time I finally buy my 1885 nickel (lowball ugly thing) on Ebay just to fill the hole in the collection - this pops up at the store today. "Oh yeah, I meant to call you on this..."

So I actually bought TWO 1885 Liberty Nickels today. As if they grow on trees! This is the better of the two by far - and I may resell the lowball one once it eventually arrives from the Ebay seller.

Meanwhile, GTG - you know the game! Winner gets bragging rights and has the option to do the "I Told You So" dance at will for the rest of the week! :)

Is there some cloudiness on the slab obscuring parts of LIBERTY?

F-12 at best, but since it's a key, who knows.

I was thinking F 12 myself as well, perhaps 15.

Net graded for the coloring (that is on the coin right?) ... VG-8

I'm guessing they gave it an F12

Certainly no less than F-15. I can see a PCGS VF-20. The coin looks cleaned, and the scratches on the obverse might details it. No telling what the TPGs do. I hate them, distrust them, and overall don't use them. They make selling coins easier though...

So to end the drama, it's marked "ungradable" by PCGS - Genuine.

By photograde it's a 15 to 20 with a soft reverse. I'm guessing it would get a technical 10 to 12 since the grade of 15/20 applies to about 90% of the coin. Definitely details - it's scratched. It is a very nice and complete strike - a far better coin than the grade (and price) would suggest.

Scratched? I don't see it in your photos. I mean, there's a little bit going on on the obverse between 1:00 and 3:00, but it doesn't look bad enough to detail it.

Technical grade is VG-10, however, PCGS graded it as a F-12, even without the I in Liberty

I thought the I was mandatory for an F grade, guess not anymore.
