Am I the only collector who is displeased with the new Presidential Dollars? The engraving appears to be done poorly. At first glance, the coin reminds me of the tokens sold at carnivals and at arcades for use in vending machines and games. Also, my eyesight makes it difficult for me to see the mint mark. On the other hand, the Mint did a great job on the engravings of most of the State Quarters. Some are so attractive that it hurts me to use them.

I cant read the edge lettering at all on the new Prez dollars. (I need to find my glasses). I dont have a problem with the design so much as the condition the coins are in by the time they reach the public.

you're no alone, the line forms to the left and is 3 miles long ;)

i have seen both coins released thus far in person and feel they are an embarrassment. Washington looks like E.T. and Adams, well, he looks like a 3rd grader added some features to the die. these 3/4 views are unflattering and are quiet possibly the worst coins produced by the US Mint. designed to fail.

I prefer the coins without the image of a real person (presidential or otherwise).

    Indian Head Cents
Liberty Nickels (or make Buffalo nickels with incused dates!)
Walking Liberty Quarters or Half Dollars
    etc.

I like the symbolism they present more than having a famous president on a coin, commemorative or otherwise.

i hope the mint will change plain rim for all prez coins. the lettering on the rim is the ugliest of all. look other foreign coin with lettering edge. they were beautifully done.

If you mean that you hope the mint will change to a plain rim, don't forget that the "Committee of 536" (aka Congress and the current prez) would have to change the law first.

I mean, when was the last time you saw something designed by committee that was well designed?

The quality is very poor. The coin itself is cheap looking and kind of a letdown after all the pre-release promotion. I'm keeping a few rolls of each president as they get released. But I have no interest in starting an album or folder of this series.

I'm still going to collect them just because they're coins, but in small numbers. The State Quarters and Westward Journey Nickels were one thing, but the Mint has definately gone too far. I would prefer a one dollar piece with a Liberty design on the obverse and a new eagle design on the reverse.

There is no consitency in relief or scale on these either. The Washington head is very low relief and large head. the Adams dollar has higher relief and smaller head. Is it me, or does Adams look like he's got lipstick on?And, there was enough room on the reverse to spell out "ONE DOLLAR" as well. There was no need for the "$" sign. I think the reverse may have a bit too much relief.

Also, the anti tarnishing agent used on these doesn't work at all. They lose their luster just as quick as the Sacagaweas.

For some reason, I like these coins. Dunno why. I'll be collecting the proofs for sure, but that's probably it.

I have no interest in collecting them. They are a huge disappointment. Now, their very unpopularity might result in them being valuable at some time in the future, but they just aren't good looking coins.

It's not the Mint, it's Congress. The Mint only does what it is told. If you want to get mad at someone, get mad at the Congressman you elected. Better yet, write them a letter expressing your disappointment.

I like them...they look better after some time in hand...but on the whole, I think they are pretty cool. The only modern american coin I now collect.

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

I like 'em better than the state quarters. I never really liked the state quarter, or the westward jeffersons' (exept for the buffalo proof, that one is sweet)

    like them or not

like it or not. the mint is still making a hugh amount of money. with 300,000,000 pieces of dollar coins not being wanted by american before. another billion of dollar coins will be added this time and in the future.

I won't collect them outside of the annual silver proof set. Like I mentioned in another thread, MAKE 'em silver, the entire series. Now that would make a great collection.

The mint REALLY needs to print on rolls what mint they are from.

Are you referring to the the rolls the mint sells or bank rolls?
