    Hello-
I am still browsing for a new coin for my brother's Bday. I have bought him a Morgan, liberty cap, and others. I wondered if the experts here could tell me their opinions on the 3 cent silver shield and the Shield nickel. Any years in particular? I have found some in MS condition. I wanted to keep the purchase under $200.
    Thoughts, Coin Gods?

Welcome from Friendswood, both the three cent and V nickel are net coins. Not sure what dates to look for but with a budget under $200, you ought to get him started with a good collection.

First, what is a net coin? He collects US coins. I have purchased him his "most valuable" coins in his collection. He appreciates them all. So, his collection is growing, but not filled with the more "expensive" ( $500 or more) coins. He would like anything, he has not focused his collection on any particular type of US coin.

I think he meant "neat coin."

My top 3 pick would be a PCGS MS63 seated dime, Barber dime or a standing lib quarter.

You can do something really_nice (63 easy, 64 if you're lucky) with $200 for a Shield Nickel, and a lustrous Mint State example is something to just sit there and stare at. 3CN's are more difficult as they're so typically poorly struck and lacking in luster. That said, from a numismatic standpoint if you can find a 3CN with what you'd call an "excellent strike" you've found a keeper as well.

Dave I believe the op said silver three cent piece . A fish scale. However to the op Dave is correct as three cent pieces are high dollar in ms silver dates, and also hard to find . Three cent CN, easy to find depending on date , do offer sometimes nice clash marks , but have to be one coin that other then clashed pretty boring, even though I collect them. You could find a nice 1867-69 shield nickel in Au with a variety for that amount of funds. Plus shields do offer quite a bit of design to look at. A 68 or 69 RPD are easy to find. Just a suggestion .

Yes, I so mean the 3 cent shield not the nickel. I like the unusual look of this coin, so I know he does not have another like it. I was even considering a civil war token. But that is really not a US coin. I did like some of the tokens from the Union states. Thoughts?

So you're looking for a silver 3 cent piece . 1851- 1873 dates. You should be able to find a 52 or 53 in ms condition for 200.00

Three cent nickel also is a possibility.

That's true. But a nice business strike is in the ball park.

Yes, but not by much. $300 would do it with luck; $400 would do a nice PF65. MS64 is within reach at $200.

Depends I suppose whether he likes proofs or business strikes.

I will look into the 52 53 3 cent shield coin. $200 is my absolute max price. I don't think he really cares about proofs or strikes (yet). Still considering the civil war token, but does that fit into a US coin collection?
