And here I was hoping there could be a Dan Carr thread without the 25 pages of "nuh uh," "yah huh," that usually happens.

That's great, and I certainly wouldn't wish anything to happen, but this doesn't mean one should be so foolish as to think it impossible. Nothing less or more, sir.

    Self-fulfilling prophecy?

    I'll echo that!

By what you like and to heck with entertaining the thought of an "investment coin"!

I don't think any have actual investment potential, but I do think they'll all be selling above issue price after they're discontinued. I wrote in another thread that I'm considering buying a full high-grade set, plus an extra set to offset the costs a bit. I don't think I'd break even, but I'd probably come out a little ahead on the second set, effectively giving me a discount on the coins I want. :)

  10. FWIW: I would not invest in these just as I would not invest in coins in general. There are better places to invest your money IMO. I laugh when people remark how much over silver spot these initially sell for from the Moonlight Mint. These are not bullion. As far as future potential value goes, they usually sell for well over initial price on eBay once sold out and do not tend to lose value over time. What is yet to be determined is long term value. Well, let's see, you have a very talented artist creating these using a retired US Mint coin press. His designs have been used by the US Mint for circulating coinage. His original designs are outstanding and are currently unmatched in numismatics. His overstrikes are highly controversial...people either love or hate them. All his work is very limited in mintage. Even though I would not invest in these, the future value of his work looks very bright to me. TC

In essence: if abstract future people will want to buy them, then an abstract future market will exist. The future can be SO annoying... :wacky:

If in a generation or two his name is not selling these coins, there may be trouble in paradise. His original designs are great but to simply put another date on a government coin, my not be an item to stay in demand. I don't own any but down the line I leave that option open. I would rather pay a little more if they are successful at staying afloat. They are missing the history behind them like the civil war tokens have.

I don't think his name is selling these coins. I think the coins are selling themselves. If anybody else did overstrikes this nice, I'd buy them, too.
