Please post your Hunnic coinage. Just got this one in mail yesterday! AV Dinar ND 7.05g/ 17mm Sind Mint Anonymous Hunnis Chieftain circa 5th Century AD obv. Bust of Peroz I Right/ Tamgha Right rev. Fire Altar flanked by two attendents/ Arrow above SNS III/pl.146 C 17 variety Tamgha Senior, Sind, 7 var. Mint State
Thanks....its raining here too(reason I am at home and not working) Unfortunately, its H20/not AV rain. This coin, according to the book, "Sunrise Collection", Volume one is extremely rare. I have never seen one like it. John
This is actually a finer specimen than the one in Sunrise. The Peroz type is perhaps the most common of the Sind imitations, since all later coins in the series are degenerate variants of this type. The same type also appears in SNS 3, with the same tamgha. Here's the Sunrise specimen.
I regret that I only have one Hunnic Coin... Nezak Huns Spalapati Deva AR Jital, AD 750-850 Obv.: Horseman right holding lance. Rev.: Bull left, Sarada script. Reference: Tye 5. Ex: John Anthony... (forgot to add!)
You know the coin is serious when it gets its own Ivy League education. I just hope the state of NJ doesn't leave a "film" on the coins.
Great coin, panzerman, and thank you to pfitzner for providing context with other examples. I have no Hunnic at the moment, but if you don't mind me stretching the rubrics to include other Sassanian imitations, here's a recent arrival from Tabaristan...
My favorite Hun is a Kidarite made in the Kushan Style. Naming Gadahara-Peroz. I have Alchon Huns Turkic Huns Xionite Huns Huns in Gujarat Some other kinda Huns (Hephthalites)
John Anthony:Very nice coin, great portrait of ruler. Thats the first coin I have seen from Tabaristan.
Neat examples, ancientnoob! Man, that Alchon Hun Ruler was scary looking! I remember a movie about "Atilla the Hun" played by Anthony Quinn. Hollywood depicted Atilla in a better image for sure, just like when Omar Sharif played the role of Genghiz Khan!
