@Alegandron, once again I'm blown away by those pre-denarius wonders you show. Having already dispayed it many times I wont show again my Lupa didrachm, but I would like to be with you on the building of this tremendous series : I just love them Q
Thank you. This is a fascinating period in Roman / World history and really fantastic coins that reflected their times. Fun collecting them! The Roman AE Litrae were minted complementary to the Didrachmae series 280-211 BCE. I have most of that series also, but the quality is not as vivid on AE as you can see in AR.
Wonderful posts everyone!!! Since I still lack any but the few quinarii I have, I'll take advantage of 'Al's "being easy" (LOL) and post a Brutus as consul ....just since it's kinda cool:
Very interesting coins Alegandron. It's an area I intend to get into further. I love the Greek influence and the first one always reminds me of the horses on Punic tetradrachms. This is my only one so far from the series. Didrachm, Neapolis (?) after 269-266 BC, AR 6.78 g, 20mm. Head of Hercules r., hair bound with ribbon, with club and lion’s skin over shoulder. Rev. She-wolf r., suckling twins; in exergue, ROMANO. Sydenham 6. Crawford 20/1
That is one that I do not have and is a target for me. Beautiful example! You have a really great coin!
those coins rock gandalf! both lovely, love victory....but the apollo horse combo may just edge it out for me.
LOL, yeah, even my "UGLY" Roman Didrachm is really cool to me. I really love this series: Roman Republic AR Didrachm (Pre-Denarius Coinage) 275-270 BCE (Rare) 17.7 x 20.7 oblong strike, 7.3g OBV: ROMANO, laurel head of Apollo l REV: Horse galloping r, star above Crawford 13/1; Sear 23 These were struck as a response to Pyrrhus' invasion of Italy at the behest of Tarentum. He was King of Epirus 306-302 BCE and 297-292 BCE; King of Macedonia 288-285 BCE and 274-272 BCE; and King of Syracuse 278-276 BCE... Known for the term "Pyrrhic Victory" during his battles with Rome. Even though the battles were won by him, the Romans inflicted such losses on his armies that he could not ultimately sustain war with them. Not the prettiest coin example of the series that I have, but the horse is cool, and the history is great! And these are pretty hard to find...
