I see that CNG 102 is now online. As with the most recent CNG eAuctions, there are coins from Tom Cederlind's estate which CNG appears to be liquidating, which makes me sad. As I look through the lots, there are several coins I recognize from browsing his stock and even some he approached me with specifically thinking I might need it for my collection. Tom was the first dealer to really take me under his wing when I started into ancients. I bought a few coins from him here and there, but he and Mike always recognized me in person and I was greeted like an old friend when I'd see them at a coin show. This was when most dealers considered me a looky-loo and wouldn't give me the time of day. He was the first dealer to "represent" me at auctions, reviewing and reporting on the coins I was interested in and then bidding at the auction. While I moved on to form other relationships, Tom always had a special place in the hobby for me and I miss him. In fact, lot 819 the Caesar denarius is my coin that Tom bought for me at NAC in 2009 along with another Caesar denarius I still have. It guess it's fitting that it's getting sold along with Tom's other coins.
I finally had the time to read this in the CNG 102 catalog. I know many don't receive one so this is for all of you folks.....and for Tom.
Thanks for the post. I met Tom in Houston several times. He normally made the GHCC show in early December. He was always willing to show me the RR coins and other neat stuff in his case even though I initially bought much lower grade and cost coins. A couple of the coins he sold me are shown below:
Tom was a friend of mine, and I knew him from the mid 1980's on. He was my mentor in the coin business and will be missed. I bought countless thousands of coins from him, a few of them below:
@4to2centBC thanks for sharing the article about Tom Cederlind. I appreciate it, since I do not receive that catalog. Tom was instrumental in getting me interested in ancient coins and was always on the lookout for coins that would enhance my collection. He will be missed.
