Hello, my fellow CTers. Another guess the grade for you. What do you think this would grade as?

I'm not a cent collector but I do enjoy this series and find it amazing how much value some of the lower denomination coins can command.

Full disclosure here, I'm considering selling this coin to a friend of mine who desired to put together an entire collection of Lincoln cents but I'm struggling with the decision to sell it as I have an attraction to it. It is one of the more valuable single coins in my collection and although there's no sentimental value, I think it's an exceptionally beautiful coin and it happens to be one with a semi-key date so I've always kept it in my collection.

Knowing this, what would you do? Sell it? Keep it? What's the outlook on Lincoln Cents....will the value grow considerably once they've ceased minting them or would the value remain consistent? I know I'm speculating here but I'm curious and wonder if it's better kept than sold.

Any information you can provide me would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

No problem strike, fairly clean, but not much luster. I think it would go 63 RB.

So far as the rest of your questions go, it is pretty much up to you. I have no idea when or even if they will stop the penny let alone what it will do to pricing.

FWIW, I have noticed PCGS prices have dropped a bit lately, but NGC seem to have increased. Have no idea what that means.

Well, they've already ceased minting 1909-S Lincolns... ;)

It seems to me that once cents no longer circulate, and are no longer the cheapest and easiest coin for kids to start collecting, they will lose some of their cachet.

My call 62 bn. And a nice one for the grade. There's not quite enough red for rb and there's a few significant marks on the profile. 63 wouldn't surprise me tho pcgs has it at $300 in 62 bn. Greysheet is at $275 for 60 bn and $300 for 63 rb. So a fair value around $300 I'd say

I agree. On a bad day AU-58, it looks like the cartwheel luster might be broken in the fields. It's a beautiful key date, I really like it! Does it cartwheel? I can't read the luster from your pictures.

Glad I'm not the only one!

@FmrFiatFollower, I won't hazard a guess at a grade because I can't get a read on the luster, but I would say the grades given are on target, depending on if the luster is broken anywhere and how much luster in general there is. It looks like there might be a slightly soft strike on the obverse. As for color, I call it BN as well.

This is a nice coin, and I don't think I'd sell it if it were mine. :) I love the relatively mark-free fields.

I can't see the luster, but I think it's there because of the incredibly diffuse lighting that was used to image the coin. But, I think it's a 1909-S S over horizontal S MS64 RB. PCGS price guide values it at $575 so really it's probably $475 - $500.

You can see the pick up on the MM for the S/S.

I've seen worse reverses on a 66. ONE CENT is pristine. I'm leery about offering a grade without the coin in-hand, but I don't think 63 will do it.

    Here's the S/S pickup:

Not enough luster for a gem grade.
