Thanks Doug. It was the nice looking reverse that called to me. For the price (less that $10) it was not a coin I could walk away from despite the difficulties with the obverse. I find that I am buying coins that allow me to tell a story about them more and more. This must be your influence wearing off on me. I just need to find the discipling now to write some of it down and share it online though I am not as erudite as you. I must also find the discipline to walk away sometimes. I find myself buying coins to give them a good home rather than for any other compelling reason. Ho hum, The hoard grows.
I haven't had a chance to share this one yet... Constantius II, AD 337-361 AE Follis, 5g, 25mm, 12h; Antioch mint, 350-355 Obv.: D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right. Rev.: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Γ in left field, helmeted soldier left, spearing falling horseman who is clutching horse's neck // ANS Reference: RIC VII Antioch 135 (p. 523).
Well my acquisition of Fallen Horsemen continues unabaited..... Another couple added to the pile... The first is nothing to write home about but the second is quite pleasant. Constantius II - AE2 Obv:– D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right, D behind bust Rev:– FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Helmeted soldier to left, shield on left arm, spearing falling horseman; shield on ground at right. Horseman is falling forwards bare headed reaching towards emperor Minted in Cyzicus (//SMKE). When it comes to an original and distinctive style, the four officinae of Alexandria from this period are hard to beat. My favorite is my A workshop. Notice all of these show the horse hanging his head below the groundline.
Back again. These old habits die hard I just keep finding Fallen Horsemen that appealto me and I keep buying them. One more Alexandrian.
