What does everyone think about the Northwest/Gene Henry hoard Morgans? I've noticed an abnormally (?) large amount of them with dark-black toning. Especially on her face. Also, what would cause so many to tone that way in the same spot?

I've never heard of this hoard. Do you have a link? Black toning is the terminal state.

    Thanks for the link.

I hadn't heard about it either. From what popped up on Google, it didn't make that much of a splash though NGC is doing the grading/slabbing with a special label.

That site atcarroll found looks a bit self promotional IMHO.

Your link doesn't mention anything about toning, but since there are 135,000 coins in this collection, I would say that the heirs and NGC have every right to use the term "hoard".

A search on Ebay turned up 487 of these Morgans.

Gene L Henry was a serious contributor to our hobby. He died a couple years back with over a 100,000 Morgans. They haven't even graded them all yet.

I'm new to nusmatics, what does terminal state mean?

In this usage, the last-possible stage of chemical change on the surface, the point at which the most hardcore lover of toned coins is also calling it "tarnish" in a negative sense. It's a visual and grading detriment at this point.

Yes, but what if it is already graded and slabbed. Do coins grade mint with these terminal spots, or do they happen after they are slabbed?

Gene died last Sept. i have sold him over a hundred Morgans, 93s in vf i kick myself for selling. every show he would buy every Morgan on the floor. he new more about Morgans than anyone i've come across and had more coins than anyone too! He had a shop downtown Seattle for years, he had buckets full of the Morgans.then moved to Issaquah, Wa. very nice guy and always paid the highest price for your coins..He literally had tons of pennies, nickles dime and quarter, half's. he also would buy your silverware sets, i sold him two sets when silver price was high, i have a very large set i've been holding for a friend hoping the price would go up. He will be missed.

It's not inconceivable that the toning would continue progressing after being slabbed, but if it's adjudicated as natural by the TPG they'd slab it as-is. In extreme cases they might call it "environmental damage."

But if he was a wholesaler, I would be hard pressed to call it a collection or even a hoard

Right off the top of your head, how many dealers, wholesalers or collectors can you list who have 135,000 Morgan dollars?
