This might be a lost cause but I'm hoping that some sleuth on this site can help me nail down the date of this 8R. I'm thinking it's either a 3 or a 9 because of the curvature of the visible portion. Or I could be way off. I love these coins but I'm a total amateur DSC00831 - Copy.JPG DSC00831.JPG DSC00832.JPG 8R6.JPG . Thoughts?

Hi nice coin. Old colonials are cool. It appears to me, like the remnants of 1788. With the crosslet type 8,s. The 3,s on the coins I,ve seen have a pointed shape top part. So I don't think the last number is a 3. Just my guess. I,ve been wrong before though... Have fun with it there....did you know these are the type coins that launched the $ sign? the pillar and ribbon were the influence...

From your photos, I'd go with 1798. There appears to be a slight difference in the top of the last 2 numbers.

That's why it is 1798 Plus the coin is Carolus IIII which eliminated 1788.

Exactly why I thought 90's and not 80's with my limited knowledge. THanks!
