Reason we know it isn't an 88 is because this series wasn't produced then :)

You wouldn't fool me even if it was the only thing it was possible for, Seated coinage. First giveaway, the reverse. Second giveaway, on Seated coinage the date sizes and shapes are all over the place. For example, 1847 dimes have a very large date, while 1861 dimes have a small date. (This also makes the dates nearly impossible to alter.)

    ANYWAY 1838

Yeah, AFAICT, you've got 2 options if you want to figure out which it is:
    1. Get it under a stereo microscope.
    2. Acid etch the date.
I'd go for #1 if you have one available, because #2 will basically destroy any numismatic value the coin ever could have had.

Hey Paul thank you, as you know as well as I do if I was in to monetary value these coins are at the bottom of the bucket. But moving on I have two stereo microscopes, don't believe in acid treatment and the dates that are really not that important because of the condition of the coins. I have a couple of 38's but I've always wanted and 88 it has a lot bigger bang than the 38 .LOL:happy: :blackalien: \V/
