Be honest, have you ever lost any of your coins?

I still misplaced a box of coins, but that is about 15 - 20 years ago. Either I will find it or one of my children going over my stuff when I pass. They know what to look for and also I told them to check all my pages in my books and catalogues because I usually put bill between the pages. Everything will be a surprise when they open them.

Been there, done that. Somewhere in my home office a 1872 IHC is hiding. Some years ago I was upgrading my IHC set to XF, and the one that was being replaced disappeared. I've even pulled file cabinets out from the wall to look behind and under them to no avail. I expect that someday it will turn up when I least expect it. Until then I assume it is mocking me from it's hiding place.

I had a 1800/79 large cent dissapear in a move when I was 12. I'm sure I've misplaced others. I had a 1795 bust dollar I was carrying as a pocket piece dissapear for a couple weeks. It got found in the dryer. I had a couple slabbed Morgan's get lost by the post office never to be seen again

Several over the years. I have a marked tendency to leave things sitting around.

Nothing that compares with this story from Fred Weinberg, though...

June 1986 - PCGS had been certifiying
    coins for about 5-6 months.

    I had a customer's Proof Gold (8 pcs.), including
    a PCGS 1879 $4 Stella, PR-65 then.

Long story short - It's been in the Simi Valley
Trash Dump (here in the San Fernando Valley)
since - wow - just realized it's been almost 30 years!

I paid the customer $65,000 for it the next week.

    Today - a no-doubt PR-66

And, yes, I was the one who threw it in the trash can here
in my office....for those that want the full story (I need to
use hand-gestures, backround info, full story)...just come
up to my table at the ANA this Summer and I'll spill all the details.

I've told the story to others over the past three decades, and
I'm over it, so I promise I won't get a tear in my eye when
    I re-tell it.

Wow, that one wins the thread. Nobody's gonna beat that for sheer terror.

As for myself, I once misplaced an 1862-S Seated Half for about three years. It was a coin with tremendous sentimental value because I acquired it from someone who later passed at a very young age - barely old enough to drink - having displayed all the brains and motivation to convince everyone who knew him that someday he was going to be a big name in numismatics. You cannot imagine my relief when I finally rediscovered the coin.

I also had this happen. Take the box to a locksmith and he can usually make a key from the lock manufacturer name and a number stamped on the face of the cylinder. Not too expensive, $6 to 10.

I just submitted (6) Morgans with various dates and (1) French Gold Coin to NGC. But when I look at my Coin Inventory it shows that I had (7) Morgans to turn in. I have no idea where that 7th Morgan is...and it is driving me crazy. I hope I find it.
But other than that, I have lost bids on E-bay all the time...LOL

in 2009 when laid off, i went berserk cleaning out my office/bedroom. Then months later I went looking for my coin collection in the same room which at the time fit neatly into a large pouch. I couldn't find it anywhere. I tore down the room again, searched the entire house including the basement. Drove my family crazy in helping me search. Mentally tortured myself wondering where i placed them and then came to the hard realization that all those coins my mother had passed onto me (approx. 50 walkers, franklins and kennedy, 3 morgans, silver dimes and quarters and whatever else i can't remember at this time) were accidentally thrown in the trash. I was sick to my stomach.

Several months later, searching through some binders looking for some old documentation, guess what i found? Yep. There it was, hidden in the binder, my base coin collection!! Boy, was i a happy person that day. I can't even remember having placed them there but i know i did. Whew!! that was close.

When I sold my house and moved, the only coin album that didn't make it was the one with indian heads and Lincolns, including a 1909S VDB. Thought one of my children had taken it to avoid lose with the movers but found out this was not so when I reached my new home. I suppose that could have been worse: they were all obtained at face value.

I, like others on here, Iost my kid coin collection to a thieving relative. Nothing of real value except for the fact I put it together with the help of my father.
