[IMG] Can I get some help? This is a very amateur picture I took using a microscope and a cell phone. Disregard the pointer in the photo. Am I seeing things or is something funky going on with this date? Does anyone think this is a 1942/1 Mercury dime?

No. On a real one, the 1 is much more prominent.

I see tons of examples like you are talking about, with an obvious 1. But I also see examples where it is not obvious at all. Made me wonder what was going on with this coin.

The Denver version of the overdate is less obvious, like so:

It's usually easier to tell from the 4 than the 1.

The Philadelphia coin doesn't even need a detail pic. :)

Nathan, notice on the P version where the 1 is compared to where you were looking.

Yes we take great pleasure in killing the dream;)

I'm going to disagree with everyone. With the Philadelphia coin, it's rather obvious. With the Denver coin, it takes some detailed examination to tell if it's an overdate. It barely shows up, and all you can see, even under a microscope, are little points indicating where portions of the "1" would be located; you can never see the whole thing like you can on the Philly coin.

So, if this coin is a Denver minted coin, it *might* be an overdate. I cannot tell. I think if you cannot get a better picture, you should take it to your local *trusted* dealer.

Here is my 42/41 D. you can tell from the position of the 4 relative to the right hand tip of the bust truncation that it is not from the same die as the OP coin.

So you didn't look at the detail pic I posted above.
