Oh Great Philosopher...That's Real Good and adds a lot to the discussion. Wish you would have told us what you would call the characteristic on the OP's coin or do we need to wait for Mike? That's a safe position to take. That's what I like about CT. Some one posts a coin with a rim break and we need to question every possibility. Maybe the coin had a removed mounting? Perhaps it is a rim file. What about PMD? On, and on, and on, SO THAT WE ARE NOT STANDING STILL INTELLECTUALLY . Let's see if we can run up this Basic Numismatic 101 fiasco into several pages of alternative opinions. I certainly don't wish to be "standing still." I LOVE this place and all of you too!!!
Just looked up some Chinese "sayings." How about this one: "One who know little, has little to say." Or: "He who fly high - will step into nothing." This might make a fun new thread. Post your proverbs (PYP). Any members know which forum to start this?
Here's one from my younger years: Itchy Butt, Stinky Fingers . You said anybody ............................
Of course! You have more "cred" on CT than I do! Now, turn it into a proverb like: "He who dip coin have stinky fingers." Where does this thread belong (file 13?)
Good Evening ol' buddy, I've been waiting all day to hear from you. Have you given any thought to what you would call the blob on the OP's coin?
Yes, and if you'd actually read the thread you would have seen my previous posts in it and would be aware of my opinion.
It's healthy for folks to hear as many opinions as possible. When you close your mind to what others have to say, you stop learning.
Well, here's another one we just got : Mike, if this were a cud wouldn't the I and B in Liberty show as being filled in since the motto is incuse? I am leaning more to bezel damage based on that ring around the collar look. Nice low mintage coin though.
So... an interesting thing happened. I got ANOTHER 1914-D with matching retained cud marks. Pretty cool
I need to pull it back out and take some pics.. I've already added it to storage. If I remember correctly, it might have been harshly cleaned..
@jwitten nice find. I like the retained cud better. There are several of these on different dates in this series but you already know that. The one shown is either first or second best. While reading this thread again... This is true, BUT ONLY when the numismatists posting an opinion know what they are talking about. OTHERWISE, folks learn nothing and may even become confused. For example, to call the characteristic on the OP coin a lamination is just plain... So is PMD, rim file, damaged rim, etc.
