1777 Conn. Five Pence...What is this?

    Please find attached a scan of a 1777 Conn Five Pence.

    What books will help me learn about this note?

    Who signed it...why did he sign it?

    Abel Hine, b. 4 Mar 1730/1, bp. 7 Mar 1731, d. 9 May 1820 at New Milford
    Child of James and Margaret (Noble) Hine, born at New Milford, CT

    Abel Hine..first town clerk of Hinesburgh Vermont

    in 1776 Abel Hine Esq. was appointed to procure and purchase for the use of the State, all such articles of refreshment and clothing: and to transport supplies to Troops where they might be situated.


    I guess that means he was the go-fer with the credit card..lol

    Henry,as this Connecticut banknote was issued after independence,it is not of interest to British Commonwealth collectors,but it is still a very interesting American state note though.I don't know when the U.S.A. stopped thinking in Pounds,Shillings,& Pence & started thinking in Dollars & Cents though.

    You might try contacting Denlys of Boston. Been a long time since I've seen him but he deals with a lot of real early U.S. and Colonial paper.

    Nice guy if you can get in touch with him as he does a lot of shows. His staff is very knowledgeable as well.
