What do you think about this 1885 Wellsville Ohio $5.00 bill that my husband inherited? We are not collectors and have been offered different prices for this bill anywhere from $400 - $700. Not sure if we should sell it or hold onto it. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for looking. Kathy Valent
The decision to hold it or sell it is going to be a personal decision that none of us are qualified to answer. I did a very quick search but I do not see any known $5 notes from this bank which would make it pretty cool and add a nice premium in terms of value.
A 2014 Heritage listing for a different note from this bank indicated that only 6 large size notes of all type were known on this bank as of the time of the listing. It closed in 1903 and did not issue any small size. It only issued Original Charter and Brown Backs. This note is a Brown Back. The offers you have received appear to below based on the sales history for the few notes that have crossed the market.
Found this two dollar note from the same bank. http://www.currencyquest.com/item.php?item_id=2786#.VxZWkaQrLcs sold for $8,500.00!
Nice note Kathy, and pretty rare. Welcome to Coin Talk. As @planman2014 mentioned, a family heirloom is usually cherished, and unless you need the funds now, I would hold on to the note. I searched Heritage Auction Archives, for charter 1044, and only found these two. One of them is also linked by @PHanagriff to a different auction. http://currency.ha.com/c/search-res...d=0&Ntk=SI_Titles-Desc&Nty=1&Ntt=charter+1044
That's amazing I have a locked cedar chest that I am ancious to find the key for I know my Mom, saved some silver certificates in it. Nothing like your $5.00 note congrats.
