I waited nearly 3 weeks for this little beauty to arrive from Europe. Domitian AR Denarius Rome mint, 86 AD RIC 435 (R), BMC 93, RSC 201b Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P V; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: IMP XII COS XII CENS P P P; Minerva adv. r., with spear and shield (M1) This denarius is part of the third issue of 86. At the time Domitian was waging a war against the Dacians and the imperial salutations were being awarded at a very fast pace. This coin records his 12th acclamation. The denarii from these issues tend to be in fine style and quite scarce. I think it was worth the wait.
Now that I think about it, it seems like a good portion of my more favored coins have come from overseas, namely Europe. I am very grateful and feel fortunate that nothing happened to them on their way here. Here is my most recent coin from Europe: Jovinus, Western Roman Empire AR siliqua Obv: D N IOVIN-VS PF AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev: VICTOR-IA AVGG, Roma seated left on stylized cuirass, holding Victory on globe and reversed spear Mint: Lugdunum (Mintmark: SMLDV); struck 411-413 AD Ref: RIC X 1716 Took two weeks to arrive.
The toning on your coin is quite beautiful! I don't have any issues buying from European dealers ... I just prepare myself for a long wait and hope for the best.
here is mine on Hadrian. Hadrian Denarius Roma 119-22 AD Minerva standing Reverence. Strack 97; RIC 69b; C. 1062 Obv: IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG. Laureate head right, slight drapery on far shoulder. Rev: P M TR P COS III. Minerva helmeted advancing right, holding Javelin and shield. 3.33 gr 19 mm
All of our Roman coins came from Europe; some just now, some 400 years ago. My first ancestors came over when the trip was more of an adventure. I wish they had brought some coins. I try not to buy from Europe when the coin is something I could get locally. I'm glad the Domitian was found by someone to whom it was special.
Congrats 'V' !! The coin does indeed exhibit 'fine style' and I always appreciate the clarified historical significance of each.
Like the coin (good portrait, well centered and can read the legends) and history with it! I buy from Europe because that is where I find the pieces that fit my collection. Buying from Europe is a bit like living close to the Gulf in Texas. When there is a 500 year rain in Dallas you know it is headed your way, just not how fast. I have a couple of neat items I will share when they arrive and a couple more that I "really" want in coming auctions. When I see Flavian coins, I think of the Lindsey Davis series of Roman detective novels. That series has history, detectives and Roman coins! Well not many coins. While on the book subject, I think this series is a bit later and more to Doug's liking.

OH OH, This 'sounds' like a revival of an old thread we ran here a while back---a year ago?? But damned if he doesn't---although 'Q' may actually have a bit more hair
