i was roll hunting two rolls of 2016d lincolns and happened across this,,, anybody tell me wat this is. im really new at this coin collecting.
First, welcome to the neighborhood, @macdaddy76442 It looks like a scratch to me, too. It is too, too straight to be the result of a die crack. And, it looks like it is recessed which suggests that it is post-mint damage (PMD). If it was a die crack or die gouge, it would be raised on the coin. Chris PS. Is the "76442" in your username a reference to an Olds?
well thx,, like i said im new at this but it seems really awsome and i just wanna learn alot from yall guys and girls opinions and advice. no thats a zipcode
I just stopped at the bank on Friday and asked for 10 rolls of customer wrapped pennies and she pulled out a box to open and I just asked to buy the box ($25). Not trying to scare you off, but you'll go through hundreds of hundreds of rolls and hardly, if ever, find anything. But you never know. You just might find a good one. Edit: Then again, I don't look at every coin. I only go for errors, so I separate the dates I want to look at from the rest. I'm sure I'm probably missing out on die clashes and such, but they don't interest me much. I do, however, search for rotated dies on each one. My method is this: I crack a roll and flip them all so they are reverse side up, separate the memorial from the shield. Then I put them ten at a time in a row and flip them vertically to make sure they aren't rotated (haven't found one yet that's rotated), then I look for dates I want to search, move them aside, and throw the rest in the coffee container. Then I use my loupe to look at the ones I put aside. Then move on to the next roll.
I do the same thing but don't check for rotated dies. I have my cheap usb microscope fitted with a plastic tube. I set it on the coin and look at the screen of my computer. I'm in Northern California. We get Denver, and old San Francisco cents mainly. I toss all the 1997 to 2000, and post 2004 Denver cents in the bag. I throw the 1974 to 1979 cents in the bag as well. I look at the rest.
