Hi everyone, I have been seeing a lot of older coins that are extremely shiny, almost like brand new. Some look like they have been coated. Anyone else seen this too? I am sure you have as there are so many of them around...Adding a couple of pictures of older pennies that are really shiny.... Also, on the 1983 with all the pimples front and back, is that PMD? Thanks ahead of time for any info you can give me.
83 is the first full year that the U.S. Mint when to copper plated zinc for the planets. Being new, they had a lot of problems with quality. These are called plating baubles and are very common. As far as the "shininess" you've just found a couple of pretty modern coins which haven't been touch as much as others, so they've not oxidized or received much friction. I come across many LMCs from the 60 and 70s that still have good mint luster left with no oxidation.
Thank You K2Coins, but I did not think they were worth more than 3 cents, I was wondering why they were so shiny? A few of them I have seen real shiny appear to be plated...The letters and numbers appear to be thicker than they should be...I just don't understand why anyone would super shine a 1969, 1983 and also that 1984 looks sparkling brand new...??...And it's not just those three, I am seeing them every day....Just curious as to why?
simple, they just have not circulated to much yet, might have been resting in someone's coin jar for years, the '83 an '84 have plating blisters and the '84 even has a linear plating blister above the t in liberty...
