That design was probably used/copied by over hundred plus Countships/Duchies/Principalities in Europe, even by the popes in Avignon. Shown here...
Your right, way better strike. But then you talking about the Pope, who was the most powerfull man in Europe at this time! John
The reason was this, I thought this coin would not qualify as an "ancient". Since it was struck circa 1400...maybe should have been posted in "World" section. John
And in the principality of Dombes, where Anne Marie Louise de Bourbon had one minted in the second half of 17th century. A rare issue that I'm missing in my collection, but it's so rare, I've never had the opportunity of acquiring one yet Nice ones panzerman Q
I think in future when in doubt, just post them.... Cucumbor: I had chance at a Pierre II 1482-1503 Franc a Cheval/ coin was in Kunker auction graded fast stempelglanz same as one I have from Louis II. This coin went 5X over estimate which was 3500EUROS. Awesome coin though! Its always the same problem....run out of $
Jean II and Pierre II "franc a cheval" or "cavalier d'or" are among the best coins of Dombes in existence. When you have an opportunity of acquiring one, don't miss it, whatever the price ! When was that ? I don't recall seeing it and would like a picture for my records (can't find it on acsearch) Q
I will look for it, I made a mistake, it was in Goldbergs Auction catalogue. I will look thru my old auction books and take a photo for you.
No problem. If it's Goldberg's I have it. I wasn't aware of an example at Künker's. It was a gorgeous example. Thanks for your input. Q
I check all the auctions, even when I work...at night before bedtime. If, I see one in upcoming auction, I will let you know. There is also a nice Ecu d'or from Bretagne/ Francois I 1442-50 (he is on horse) in armour.
This is one of the most important coins in history. . From a commercial and trade value in Europe and the early modern age.
