I know what this is but I thought it might be fun for everyone else to try and identify it!! Oh and YES it is genuine.
It was issued during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III (1757-74).The date looks like AH1171,Year 7. Aidan.
John,it looks like it comes from the Zeri Mahbub,Rumi Altin,Surre Altin,or Adli Altin coins. My 1981 Krause only depicts a selection, but nothing from the AH1171 issue. Aidan.
It is difficult to tell what coin it is, as you don't mention diameter nor weight. It gives me the impression it is a 5 para KM#300 struck on a 10 para KM#306 planchet.
We have a winner!! Nice call bart, it is one of my favorites and one i like to think of as a real bargin. I bought this coin on a hunch from a local internet auction site. The owner thought it was brass and it only cost me $22. I had it checked by a local dealer and sure enough it was the real deal!!
John, that was a bargain for NZ$22! As I don't have a good enough catalogue to ascertain what the coin was,I had to guess. Aidan.
You were in the right ball park Aidan. I only picked the coin up because the Krause i have goes back far enough! And my one dates to 1982.
John,so which of the Altins is it? You will have to buy some new Krause catalogues from here; www.amazon.com ,including the 2nd. edition of the 21st. Century Krause & Krause's 'Unusual World Coins'. Aidan.
John,I had to guess,as it wasn't illustrated.I did have a holed Cedid Mahmudiye from the 1830's,but I lost it when my council flat was broken into back in 2002 when I wasn't home.I have a deadlock on my door. Aidan.
