Or at least that's what they were being sold as. Only paid like $4 or so for the three, but even if they were authentic, I have no idea for sure if they are Roman/Byzantine/Greek, etc., or what the last two are exactly. The 2nd looks like a small door handle and the third either an earring of some kind or a fishing weight. The first is clearly a buckle, but it is small so either perhaps for an infant or it was part of a bag or something, like an ancient backpack. I don't know at all so I'm hoping you all might have some thoughts on these. I searched for Roman buckles and mine really resembled one of them minus the groves on the sides. Thanks guys. The buckle is 1 inch long, the "door handle" is 2 inches tall, and the earring/weight is 1 inch tall.
Cool beans! I keep seeing artifacts... Looks like an area that I would like to make a foray in collecting...
I would love to own some roman glass and such. Some are affordable. Fibulas and such don't do much for me.
I would take one or two each of various brass and iron artifacts, and glass would be very interesting...
I hope it's 'ancient' (even at your modest cost) but I simply can't tell and I have to rely on those sold from auction (like Forum etc) to feel comfortable about their actual antiquity. I love these artefacts but I also realize how easy it is to misrepresent what they are or to even reproduce them. The buckle reminds me of Captain Kidd ...and that is still way cool.
The buckle is likely medieval period. The second item is a handle, one used on pots or cooking vessels (and Roman). The last is a jewelry piece. They are often mislabeled as 'axe pendants'. They were common from the Greek to Roman periods. A good buy for four bucks!
Thanks all for the comments! A correction, the lot was actually close to $6 (was skimming my buy list on my phone and confused it with another listing). If you had to guess, would you say it was early, high, or late medieval? Thank you.
I think I would collect more artifacts like these if I didn't want to spend all my extra cash on coins. Congrats.
i'm with bing, but for six bucks...what the heck. some interesting stuff VK. i always like seeing you all post this stuff as well.
Okay... The floodgates have now been opened... 16th century map of Germany Psalm sheet (I think 15th century, but not sure) 13th Century Bone Icon 14th century man's ring Woman's ring (I think 13th century) Finally: 11th century cross. I like to tell my students this was a crusader cross, but I'm not really sure. I consider coins to be my preferred artifacts to collect, but I do try to keep an eye out for anything else that's interesting. (And for the record, the two manuscript pages were inherited - I do not advocate buying pages from manuscripts that have been cut up...)
buckle is 1 inch long, the "door handle" is 2 inches tall, and the earring/weight is 1 inch tall. it is very nice buckle
