That is machine doubling. That's What incuse lettering MD looks like. It can trick you. True incuse hub doubling makes the letters look ragged like pieces are missing almost
I don't have a pic of one to show you but when you see true hub doubling on incuse letters you don't forget it. It's a very unique look. Maybe ragged wasn't the best word. More like Swiss cheese but even that doesn't describe it well.
I have seen lots of machine doubling on incuse lettering of the recent series of quarters, and there is some evidence of it on this coin. That machine doubling, most always is, very near the rim and is mainly confined to the upper serifs of the elements. In trying to explain what I would think of hub doubling of incuse elements, it would almost appear as machine doubling of relief elements, or a repunched mint mark, turned wrong side out. We know machine doubling on relief elements will reduce the size, or shave metal from the element itself, leaving a thinner element with a lower relief copy or double. If I think of that, turned inside out, there would be a thinner element deep in the incuse with a higher or not as deep copy or double and is what I see on this coin, whether I'm interpreting it right is a challenge.
Here's what incuse hub doubling looks like. And it's extreemly rare on state and np quarters for some reason. This is the incuse EPU on a shield cent. Same thing though. Check out the third post down. Bottom part is what true incuse hub doubling looks like. Weird ain't it. Makes all the letters look jagged and crooked... http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=255771
Sorry hommer. Don't know how to be more clear. If you think your letters look like the bottom unum pic in that link then ok I guess. I'm just not seeing it. Can you take crystal clear pics of that area with a camera and a 10x loupe instead if your USB microscope?
Nice! Got a 47-S nickel in change today. Obverse is beat up but a 69 year old coin is better than a rock.
Everyday, don't own a USB. I've pitched the quarter into the "interesting jar". Will let the grandkids "discover" it someday when I'm gone.
Here is a link to the 2013 lincoln cent ddr#1. Look at the letters of PLURIBUS and you will see a good example of how die doubling looks and decreases the size of incuse letters. http://varietyvista.com/01e LC Doubled Dies Vol 5/2013PDDR001 cent.htm
Why do I want Taco Bell all the sudden? Was there some sort of subliminal message imbedded in this thread?
