I like this game! This is my first BHD. When I saw the die breaks and CLASHING, I had to bring her home.
That's technically an xf40, but NGC and PCGS are usually complete dopes about this die state, often mistaking the flat eagle for extreme wear. The fact is, these don't have a complete eagle even in MS. I'm betting they called this a VF30.
That flat eagle is really a bummer on an otherwise nice busty. I'm in the 40 camp, too, but also wouldn't be surprised to see it come back lower. If it were mine, I wouldn't take VF money for it, though. Steve
VF-35 , nice half !!!!! Watch it they're addicting . I know I caught it from Frank and Ben and Mark !!!!!
1814 was not your best year if you were a Bust Half die pair. The hair detail on the obverse, and the talons on the reverse, ought to perk up the ears of even a non-expert if they're observant enough. The eagle's head and upper wings are a "one of these things is not like the other" moment by comparison. I could see this one in an XF40 slab.
Looks like a 40 to me too. Great patina and the clashes and die breaks attest to the need to stretch resources to the max and the frantic pace of work at the Old Mint. I find the flaws in these old pieces captivating.
See C-B-D's comment above. It'd be a crapshoot. Bustie collectors know their stuff, anyway. You can expect your audience (should you desire to sell) to be much better-educated than the norm, and capable of grading for themselves. Anyway, the slab itself is a value-adder to some, regardless of the grade.
Maybe. But I'd leave it in that old ANA holder. Even the Overton variety is on the label. What else do you want? (Yeah, a label calling it a 35, I know
