I have this coin that I cannot fathom. I am thinking Spanish, but . . . . . . . Does anyone recognize anything about this coin, please? (Don't be bashful.) We are talking bronze, 14mm., 0.91 gm.
You guys are great! As I dip my toes into ancient waters, I am glad to be part of this forum and the CT group in general. Steve
One of those "castle" maravedeis coins from medieval Spain. I have seen the type before. Check out this listing: http://www.antiques.com/classified/1097089/Antique--99026---Medieval-Spain--late-1500--s-AD Btw just a random Google search result. Not saying this is a good listing or price.
Thank-you, everyone, (esp. medoraman). The coin was a 'gift' with a number of other coins I purchased from a 'detector' who travelled in Spain and Portugal, so the provenance is about right. Thank-you (all) again.
With your help. I believe that what I have is a "Half Maravedis" of Philipe II, (1556-1598A.D.) Obv. Castle divides mintmark and assayer mark. Rev. Crowned Philippus monogram divides 'Officina' and assayer mark. Cuenca mint (1558-1573A.D.) Mintmaster (Patriachal cross and chalice with a star) Pedro Roman Ref: Calico 721
