Resurrecting an old thread to add another Pontos aegis coin. It took some time but I found one with good centering and strike. The usual flan preparation marks detract from the coin but this one was a good compromise of quality vs price :)

Great coin! I'd call that Best of Type, and don't think the flan preparation marks detract one bit.

Oh, @panzerman since you are new... there is a little counter on your info page listing all the times you look at my coins. I consider mine as historical museum pieces, so I am charging you a cheap rate of $1.00 USD per look. It automatically bills your credit card. ...And thank you.
:D LOL, no, just joking with you...

That is why I quoted that. You and all the others are posting supberb examples/photos....and there is NO entrance fee. Shows private enterprise works better.

Just acquired this and I have not determined the mint yet. I don't think it is from Amisos.

Well this thread is a blast from the past. Yup, Brian is now the owner of the OP coin - you know, these are tough to find with all the details lined up just right on both sides. I haven't acquired another since. Some very nice ones on this page, though - great coins!

Hmm, perhaps it is from Amastris (Paphlagonia), where the aegis/Nike bronzes were also issued during the time of Mithradates VI. Per Historia Numorum:

Æ of period of Mithradates Eupator (q. v.) with inscr., ΑΜΑΣΤΡΙΕΩΝ and ΑΜΑΣΤΡΕΩΣ (Imhoof, Kleinas. M., II. p. 501). Also Æ of first century B.C. dated from Pompeian Era. B.C. 64 (Imh., Gr. M., p. 585 f.; Rec. gén., p. 138).

On your coin I think the letters to the right of Nike could be TPEΩΣ.

Although Amisos examples are the most plentiful, there are at least four other cities who issued the type.

Hi Friends. I intended to post this coin of Perseus and Pegasus before the said resurrection of this thread by Tif. I still need to clean it, but it's quite identifiable anyway. Perseus was the son of Zeus, beside Apollo and Artemis. The coin weighs 11.66 g. Hope it's scarce. Perseus 001.jpg Perss R 001.jpg

Tif, you nailed it! I can just make out the sigma on other side of inscription. Thank you

Just in case this thread follow TIF's mention that these came from other cities, here is a Kabeira. Of course missing the K is a shortcoming not to mention Nike's head.

Oh great. Now I want one from each issuing city. :D

Let's make a list of locations issuing the type. I don't have a Black Sea book so I'm sure this list isn't complete:

    PONTOS
    Amisos
    Chabakta
    Kabeira
    Komana

    PAPHLAGONIA
    Amastris
    Sinope

    Can you add others? :)
