I recently came into a stash of coins. Among the horde were 6 boxed US commemoratives, all 1986 Liberty/Ellis Island and 1987 Constitution coins. In the interests of limited space, I was wondering if the original US mint boxes add value to the coins or if they would have just as much value without them? My guess is that most would advise keeping the boxes and the coins together even if I have them certified (which I don't think I'll do). Thoughts?
If you end up getting them the graded the boxes aren't really necessary to keep at that point but until you do that keep the boxes for sure.
Thanks everyone! I'm not surprised by the responses, I was pretty sure that opinion would prevail. I'll keep the boxes.
Definitely keep the boxes and C/A's for the reasons already noted above. If storage space is a problem, you could always separate the mint packaging and the coins and store the packaging in another part of the house.
