Picked up a few mercs for $5 ea. 2 toners (1 is fsb) and a blast white one with such gnarly polishing lines on both sides I just had to have it and pretend it's a Morgan lol.

So, my questions are what do you think of the grades and color and the polishing lines so it's a GTG & WIW thread... Are any worth setting aside to be fitted for a coffin? :)

    First coin...

#3... (and does this one qualify as fsb too?)

It looks like, to me, the cross piece has a small wear on the top of the bands. Just my opinion. Any one else?

I think the blast white one should make fsb as the center line is uninterrupted, no?

But I'm really looking for opinions on grades, values & worth Slabbing or not on these as mercs ain't really my bag.

I must say that heavy patch of file lines above EPU on the blast one is awesome. They scrubbed the hell out of a clash or whatever it was.

The good news is: there is sort of a premium on the 3rd one.... Its a clashed die with letter transfer, meaning; there is a clashed D on the reverse above the top leaf tip. I think I see another letter or 2 as well in that same area. I've found a few of these but I don't believe it's a CPG variety so............
The 1st coin is probably the nicest but would hafta make a lofty grade at the top 3 to be worth sending.... Very nice group tho!!

Well I'll be. Good eyes monster! Yes, the D is sonewhat strong and noticeable. I think there are parts of other igwt letters too but not as full and strong as the D. Bravo sir. I'm too used to morgans. These tiny things are challenging. Guess maybe anacs will slab it as a cdlt?

The first one I don't think will grade past 64 due to the soft strike. I'm thinking the second might make 66 fsb. The third, I have no clue... But what do I know about mercs

Yes, Anacs will attribute this as a D clasher on the label....I spoke with John Roberts about this very same coin, last year......... Problem is, it comes up to like $45.00 total after all is said and done with variety attribution fee etc. etc.
I've elected to sell both of the ones I've found raw, and let the buyer determine if they want to pay for the label or not....
Looks like u blindfold cherry picked another one:woot:

The toning is a lot darker than I like, unless the pics are off. I'd call the grades as:

    1945-S: 64
1942-D: 65 FSB as long as there's nothing I'm missing under all that dark toning.
1942: hard to tell with all that die polish, but I'm guessing 65. No FSB because the bands don't look rounded. Maybe they are in hand.

Yeah, I think I'll put it in the "throw in if needed on the next anacs sub" pile.

And my powers of blind cherrypicking go far beyond vams :D

Rounded? Wait, so there's more to getting an fsb designation than just an uninterrupted line?

I would say 63 or 64 on all three coins. Not worth the cost of grading.
With that said, nice looking group of dimes.

I love your Mercs, but I am not seeing an MS grade on #1; high AU instead. I agree on 65 FB for #2, and I'm at a loss as to what to say about #3 (I've studied the magnified images and absolutely cannot see the "D" clash). That said, I'd love to have #2...

Please tell us where you are seeing a D from a clash again. I'm not seeing it.

It's coming out of the axe blade. I'll try and get some good pics when I have a minute. Here's an overlay...

It's right above the top leaf tip, centered right in front of the ax blade.... The very last photo shows it best.

@Cascade , I hope you have the ability to do closeups, I'd like to get a better look. Tag me if/when you post em....

I think PCGS and NGC do it differently. NGC requires them to be rounded, while PCGS does not.
