Thanks Mat, I just won that from Roma auction. I had a AV Solidus frontal newer style bust/ this one is way nicer.
Thanks Mikey, that older design is much nicer then the later drab frontal bust....which were all weak strikes. I find the apex of Roman/Eastern Roman/Byzantine coinage was around 180/300AD, after that the art and style of the coinage went slowly downhill. Recent history is the same, apex was 1650-1800, today most coins are plain and not very attractive. Example... Swiss cantons AV 20 Dukaten from Basel 1741, sooooo nice.
@panzerman... I just got back from Vegas. I got a 1918-S Australia gold sovereign in BU grade. big $450.00!!! gorgeous gold. no pics yet. 1853 Chile centavo coin and a toned 1943 Canadian half. pics when able to.
Who you calling drab and weak? BTW the rough looking patches (like right-side obverse) aren't as strong as in the photo. Its the lighting.
Nice photos, I have that one too. I think personally the AV coins struck from Justinian I ,second obv. to 900AD were missing legends/ weakness in strike. Really tough to find one that is fully minted. Before, with previous bust/design it was easier to make.
LOL, I had seen that in the auction and thought of you, and whether you would take a swipe at it! I seriously considered it, as I have no Ancient gold or electrum. But, there were 5 other great coins I targeted, and I did get 4 of them! Congratulations, gorgeous coin!
Good for you! 4/5 is excellent. I had targeted 6 originally/ended up 1/6. The AV Stater Cunobelinus was my #1 choice/went high. I did get best deal/ unsold lot Phokaia EL Hekte depicting Zeus....
Yeah, I saw your great deal, nice capture! Your posts had me look at the unsolds, then I paused, and then it crashed in on me...I still had to pay invoice for the 4 of 5 that I won...
Lucky for me, since I had "alloted" a budget amt. for 3 lots. I missed the more expensive ones...so jumped on that. The unsold lots (price quoted) did that include 17.5% fee?
Excellent question. I was starting to read the terms of sale for unsolds, but stopped as I was just not going to buy after my wins. I think it would be bad form if they add 17.5% to a priced-sale item! I imagine they considered the fee into the unsold-price before posting the list... but, I do not know.
Why I asked. The start price on my unsold lot was 1200/ they quoted 1452...to me that would include fee+VAT exactly. My invoice stated 1742.00. They must have made a mistake and charged 2 X fee+VAT. I sent back a letter to see if there was an error. I hope to her back from them on Monday.
WOW, for an UNSOLD??? Additionally, as an American, I always ask to remove the VAT (oops, I forgot you are Canadian and you have VAT equivalent up there). Yeah, looks like they mistakenly double-dipped on ya... Ouch... Hope they have a quick positive response for you!
Good stuff! I still need a Sydney mint from George V/Edward VII/Victoria Old Head/Victoria Jubilee Head/VictoriaYH Dragon....Have GEM UNC. Victoria YH Shield. I lucked out on a Ch-UNC Sydney Wreath Sovereign....could kick myself! Should have bid higher...
That was other problem....only EU Countries pay VAT. So I was more then double dipped....I am sure it was an honest mistake.
I am sure it was an honest mistake. Hopefully, from your communication they will be able to sort it out for you! Good luck / Bon Chance! (Hey, since I have to bi-lingual all the packaging going into Canada...)
panzerman. I need a better phone for coin pics. here are some way out of focus pics from my camera 2 minutes ago... Australia 1918-S the total on this coin was $450.00 I traded a couple coins + paid $212. on my way to starting my world gold coin collection. I already have some gold coins. i will post those here when i come home from work. later bye
Good for you, you will not regret it. Even though they minted vast numbers of sovereigns, really hard finding true uncirculated specimens.
