The Coin Roll Process

    Histman Too Many Coins, Not Enough Time!

    Hey Guys! I've been roll hunting halves for about a year and a half. I have found quite a bit of silver, but had a question maybe someone can answer. My business bank (Rabobank) is very accommodating and will order whatever I want, in whatever denominations I want. My credit union (Golden 1) has counting machines in several of their branches. So as far as the process of roll hunting goes, I'm in pretty good shape. The hitch: Both institutions use Garda for coin logistics. Does anyone know what the process is when these coin logistics companies pick up the coins? Do they take it to one central location for processing, counting, re-wrapping, and pick up by all of the companies (Brinks, Loomis, Garda, etc.) or does each logistics company have their own processing location that continues to resupply them? I ask because I am starting to get my own marked, previously searched coins --- as you might imagine with both institutions using the same company.

    Just as an FYI -- my pickup bank and dump bank are over an 1 1/2 away from each other.

    Any info would be greatly appreciated. I have one of my tellers asking the delivery guards, but wanted any input from you pros.

    Thanks!

    @Histman

    When I was searching rolls, I used my BoA branch for both ordering and deposit. I was ordering $1K of Kennedy halves every week for several years. After a while, I noticed that certain coins were coming back to me. No, I don't mark them (and I hope you aren't) but I do occasionally find some that had been marked before I got them. So, I spoke to the head teller, and she confirmed that BoA uses their own central facility for supplying rolls to all of the BoA banks in the region. So, what I was searching each week, I had probably searched at some time in the past. It was at this point that I opened a secondary account at a local credit union after I first confirmed that their orders were placed with the Miami FRB.

    The only thing I can suggest, is that you confirm whether or not your bank and credit union get their rolls from the same source. If they do, then I guess it's time for you to shop around for another bank. I hope you don't live in a small town or sparsely-populated region because it would be a good bet that your supplier serves all of the banks.

    Marking/tagging coins is sacrilege. Can't stand it when I get a bad batch of halves that has graffiti all over it.

    I got that impression from the OP's comment. I hope that I just misunderstood.

    You did. I take note of all coins already marked in my rolls and record them so I can tell if I am getting them again and again. I have noticed at least eight different individual marks from previous searchers.

    They both use Garda. My question was weather a bank that uses Loomis or Brinks would get the coins from the same place as Garda, or do they have their own processing centers where the coins never mix.

    I mean to say "1 1/2 hours away from each other."

    I get the impression that all three are secure delivery companies where banks are concerned. They resupply cash and rolls as well as pick up deposits. That doesn't necessarily mean that any of these companies roll their own change.

    I don't really know if the transport company does their own.
    I do know the local federal reserve bank (just a reminder that is NOT a government institution but a private bank) does the coin bags that come off the machine at my pick up bank. When they send out a bag off of their coin machine it is counted at the federal reserve. The transportation company takes it to the federal reserve branch, they do not count it themselves.
    Anyway, I do pick up at a bank that uses one transportation service and drop and a bank that uses a different one. Seems like a good plan but I really don't think it makes a dif.
