Now that's one I REALLY LOVE a lot!!! It has a bit of everything---gold, late Roman and Visigothic!!!
I love the so called "Migration Period" coinage. I am always suprised that the Vandals never struck any gold, actually the Saxons in England also had very little gold/mostly silver. I looked this coin up....no record anywhere.
I'm a bit curious, panzerdawg => do you have any gold coins with cool animals on 'em? => what triggers your "want" for coins? Obviously being "gold" is a major driving-factor, but are there other factors that lead you towards your coin-targets? ... or is it merely "'good deals on gold coins" that drives your collection? I'm obviously jealous of your superb coins, but I can't figure-out your coin-theme (did I miss a coin-thread where you mentioned your strategy?) I like you and I love your cool coins, but I'm unsure of their common-theme? ... or maybe you're like me and you randomly roam the coin-world, buying coins that tickle your fancy?
Steve, thanks for that post. Answer to all question... Yes, I have many with animals, like I have 13 of the Wildlife Conservation coins issued by 24 Countries circa 1974-79 (ex: Indonesia=Komodo Dragon) Then many like Nurnberg Lamb Dukats etc. Theme to my madness? Nope. I collect from 650BC to most modern from above. I really cannot afford what I want most....so, try to get at least some nice material. Since, most AV Aurei are out of reach, I will start to build a collection of the AR denarius/ants, that way I can get most emperors/usurpers.... Quality, I try to obtain material in FDC/Mint state/EF. Just something in my blood that makes me want that. One thing, I must say, it is nice to share the coins(photos) with others, like we are doing these days, on this forum. Its to bad that there are collectors sitting on fantastic coins, but we only get to ever see them in an auction catalogue. Back to animals, I figure with my new goal to obtain Roman silver coinage, there are lots with hippos/elephants/lions/antelopes....actually, my oldest coin (Lydia 1/12 Stater depicts that Lion with a nob on his nose!
This was the description by auction Numismatik Lanz. The Osthrogoths did not strike coins in his name, same for Seuvi/Burgundians....
nice coin! I have a question for mr Panzerman - is it your nice siscia constantius solidus in your collection Edited: Rules:Goran, B/S/T discussion is not allowed in general forum, they must be in the advertisement areas.
I have that/plus no money.....just keep spending it on coins. Now there is another CNG 102 auction on horizion/plus Rauch/Morton and Eden..... Its enough to drive a man to the "poor house"!
Hi Goran: Thanks for that, but I could never sell it. According to CNG it is one of two known according to Dreyeport....don't know him? Hard to get solidi from Siscia Mint. The Treveri (Trier) are more common. John
