I love collecting Carthage also. Have some decent AE's, some ratty ones (fun!), and some AR's... I like my 2/3 AR Shekel from prior the 1st Punic War Carthage AR 2/3 Shekel 18.4mm, 4.4g Obv: Tanit l, wreath of corn, necklace, single drop earring Rev: Horse standing r, head l Ref: Sear Greek Vol 2 6491; SNG COP 143 var R; supposed RARE? Comment: I believe a meteor struck and tore off the left foreleg and part of the chest of this poor stallion. He is brave and still holds his head high!
Let me add my Entella Tet to the pile: TIF's huge 15 Shekel would make all our tets look like a pile of dimes.
@TIF Big 15 Shekel is a scary coin, I would give me left foot for one. (She might find something crafty to do with it.) That's the coin she said she would will to me, so now I am just waiting...
=> here is a coin from when the Vandals were in town!! VANDALS IN CARTHAGE, Æ 21 NUMMI Date: 523-533 AD Size: 20.26 mm Weight: 6.28 grams Obverse: Soldier standing facing Reverse: Head of horse left, XXI in exergue Attribution: MEC 45
LOL. Love all the horsies here. Keep 'em coming! @Ancientnoob, your coin is rather dark, so I'd suggest placing it against a white background rather than black. Oh, and what is this I hear about a 15 shekel, @TIF? That would weigh what, 165 grams? That's one heck of a silver puck!
Yep ZEUGITANA, Carthage early 2nd century BCE AE 15-shekels, 45 mm, 95 gm Obv: wreathed head of Tanit left Rev: horse standing right, left foreleg up; solar disk with uraei above Ref: Alexandropoulos J (2000) Les monnaies de l'Afrique Antique, 103; Müller L (1861) Numismatique de L'Ancienne Afrique, 131; Luynes 3782; Jenkins GK and Lewis RB (1963) Carthaginian Gold and Electrum Coins, Royal Numismatic Society, London, pl. 28 12
Great coins! At the moment I haven't yet any siculo-punic coin in my collection. However, after looking at the coins of this thread, it becomes clear that I have to fill this gap!
