I'll be honest. I do not know my... Elbow from a whole in the ground when it comes to Ancients. I bought this coin in 2008 from New American auctions. Just came across it again. Can you anyone help as to what it is? Thanks in advance!
Amasia, Pontos, Caracalla as young co-emperor with Septimius Severus. I do not have it but dad's version is below. Mine is AE32 but I've seen them listed even larger. The coins were struck on flans with casting voids that sometimes were not erased by striking. Coins this big are not easy to make.
I'm embarassed. I forgot I do have a Caracalla AE29. There are several little differences like what is on the wall but they always have the tree.
Coincidentally, there was one of the general type in today's Roma auction: Severus Alexander Æ34 of Amasia, Pontus. Dated CY 234=AD 231-232. AVT K CEOVHPOC AΛEΞANΔPOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / AΔ CEY AΛEΞ AMACIAC MH, eagle with wings spread standing atop altar; above, Helios in facing quadriga; tree to left of altar, ЄT CΛΔ (date) flanking eagle. SNG von Aulock 43 SNG Copenhagen 118. 22.56g, 34mm, 1h. It realized £301 on an estimate of £120.
