Crazy Horse Tetradrachm - Punic Sicily

There really is not much I can add to this board about this particular coin type and those of other places in Sicily. @Collect89 informed me there was no more room for threads on coins of Entella, and that Coin Talk was no longer accepting threads on the coins of Entella. Yet here we are.

Scratched one off the bucket list.

Sicily, Entella (s BC 300-289)
AR Tetradrachm 26 mm x 15.93 grams
Obverse: Bust of Melqart (Herakles) right wearing Lion skin head dress.
Reverse: Horse's head to left, palm tree behind. MHMHNT ('ommachanat' ) in Phoenician in ex.
Ref Jenkins 321. SNG Lloyd 1644. Carthage Series 5, minted in Sicily (Jenkins SNR 57 273-421)
Note: Dark Toning. Small amount of horn silver on obverse, nice Sicilian Flan.


The only time in my life where I wouldn't mind ending up with a Sicilian Horses' Head in my bed.

Nice coin. The image seems to have a blocky look with few shades of gray making the coin look a little odd. If the coin looks like tis in hand, I would have to suspect there was once a lot more horn silver that was cleaned a bit roughly. I suggest rephotographing this one.

i have to agree with you. My llight that I had been using to get my best images crapped out, I replaced with two other lights but none of the images I have taken are great. and really not happy with any of them. There are some other seller l auction images that are both good and bad in there own ways.

I've always been a fan of the Punic wars, going back to college when I took a Roman History class (a class I actually showed up to, for a change). I was going to collect Punic coins when I first got into ancients, but got lured away to Roman Republicans (really the other side of the Punic war, right?!). Thus my name Carthago which goes way back in internet days.

I still have one which I'm keeping for good:

SICILY, Entella. Punic issues. Circa 320/15-300 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.21 g, 12h). Head of Persephone left, wearing barley-ear wreath, triple-pendant earring, and necklace; four dolphins around / Horse’s head left; palm tree to right, Punic ‘MMHNT below. Jenkins, Punic 156 (O48/R141); Boston MFA 491 (same dies); SNG Copenhagen 84 (same obv. die); SNG Lockett 1050 (same obv. die).

 

Noob, I get the feeling of deja-vu when I view your wonderful post LOL.... It looks as great now as when I first saw it even with a less than perfect photo (which I seem to specialize in)

It took me from 1985 when I discovered this type until 2015 to get what is the ultimate example for me (I am sure there are better ones still). I got lucky in an auction where there was only one bidder besides me and my stomach muscles were stronger that day.

Your new horse rocks and I would have bid on it if I still needed one.

that means a lot coming from someone who just showed some killer and well thought out examples. The fault of the coin made it just cheap enough where it was within striking distance.

 

The fun is in the hunt! I think I upgraded my Herakles/Horse coin 3 times before getting the one I have now. When the chance comes, take it!
