Well, Hello, and welcome to the second installment of weapons on coins. If you missed the previous installment use the "search" link at the top of the website. Here we find ourselves looking at Mozambique's coins. This first specimen is a 1980 20 meticais. It bears a German Panzer tank. Image courtesy of World Coin Gallery: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...zambique km103 20 Meticais (1980) Panzer tank This next Mozambique coin is a 1986 50 meticais. Note the soldier's rifle is slung over his shoulder in a troop movement position, but the gun on the obverse is a semi automatic and has a bayonet locked in position (weapon on obverse and reverse)! http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...ue km112 50 Meticais (1986) woman and soldier Naurau is an island discovered by John Fearn on November 8, 1798. The ship you see is the reason I associated this 1994 $10 commemorative coin to John Fearn to this trivia's theme. You see, Fearn was a two-fold seaman. He was an explorer sailing from New Zealand all the way to the China Sea exploring and whaling. The ship you see here on the coin is the Hunter, a whaling ship. Thus it has a forward deck for the harpoonist to throw the harpoon at a whale! The island honored him because he was the first European to set foot on it. Here's an image of the one ore coin courtesy World Coin Gallery: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...orway km387 1 Ore (1941-1945) WWII Occupation And here's the ten ore: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...rway km389 10 Ore (1941-1945) WWII Occupation It seems inevitable that when Norway decided to produce a coin commemorating the 350th Anniversary of its Army (1628-1978), they would incorporate the use of the battle lion holding battleaxe: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...y km423 5 Kroner (1978) Anniv. Norwegian Army Palau Mermaid coins are very beautiful and thus need a weapon to protect them. Here's a perfect example; the 1995 Commemorative one dollar coin honoring their membership in the United Nations. Horses, Mermaid and trident. http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...km14 1 Dollar (1995) Member of United Nations This 1993 $1 coin commemorating Marine Life Protection is another example holding a spear instead of a trident: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...au km3 1 Dollar (1993) Marine Life Protection How about two mermaids with tridents? http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...alau km25 1 Dollar (1998) Bottle-nose Dolphin Palau's 1999 $5 Germania coin commemorating Togo is one of the world's great art pieces. Notice the detail on the sword's hilt and sheath? http://worldcoingallery.com/countri... km24 5 Dollars (1999) German Togo - Germania Another Germania tribute to the Cameroons put a sword at the side of a native maiden: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...9 5 Dollars (1999) German Cameroon - Germania Panama's 5 Balboa coins minted 1972-1976 have a unique coat of arms on the reverse with (count them) 4 swords. Two on each side of the shield at top left and top right: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...138-31&desc=Panama km31 20 Balboas (1972-1976) For Poland's contribution to weapons on coins I selected the 1995 two zloty because it pays tribute to the Battle of Warsaw with troops marching with their rifles on their shoulders. http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...c=Poland y297 2 Zlote (1995) Battle of Warsaw Portugal minted few different battle coins, but this one caught my eye. I hope it catches yours. It's a 1928 10 Escudos commemorating the Battle of Ourique: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...gal km579 10 Escudos (1928) Battle of Ourique This also caught my fancy: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...00 Escudos (1990) Restoration of Independence And I like this commemorative of the Discovery of Africa: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri... km710 200 Escudos (1998) Discovery of Africa And do you like this 1999 200 Escudos honoring Duarte Pacheco Periera? That sword would be a collector's item, for sure! http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...719 200 Escudos (1999) Duarte Pacheco Pereira I vote this Portugese 20 escudos Most prominently displayed sword: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...km650 250 Escudos (1989) Founding of Portugal This ends today's trivia.
