That a 12 year old can accomplish over the next 2-3 years. I've been thinking 1927-D up to AU. Rather affordable and one of three sub-million SLQs. A bit hard to find in all the desired grades, but an underrated date IMO.
I always loved the 1917-P Type I as it was the way MacNeil designed it and is also the coin that comes with the best strike bar none . Not very expensive in those grades either . Great idea for a YN .
This would have been my choice also. I love 1917's. Seems like you can find them hammered so hard they stay FH down into VF.
I notice 1917 T1s are a bit more expensive and have a much higher mintage, but they are beautiful coins and easy to find. I'll consider them.
Well, a grading set ought to be an issue known both for good strikes and commonality, especially since you should be taking it well into Mint State to be relevant. Hey, it's easy for me to spend your money.
1929/30 are also readily available (type 2b). Good idea to get a set of all the different grades - start a thread and keep us posted about your progress!
lelelel (Actually, some people doubt the reason for the design change was the exposed breast, but because of other reasons, such as the coin not stacking properly or all the crevices catching germs in them)
I always thought it was because WWI was looming and we wanted Miss Liberty in Armor . Though I don't think anyone knows .
Taken in the context of the times, it's not hard to understand the effect an exposed breast would have on public opinion.
This kind of contradicts my last comment here, but I've heard there was a group who not only wanted the Treasury to stop minting the immoral coin, but to recall every T1 SLQ already in circulation. I'm not kidding.
I'm 99.9% sure they don't know why the design was changed . Look at vignettes back them an exposed breast didn't cause any uproar . Though you never Know and Dave's explanation has been thrown around for awhile and all it would have took was a congressman's wife to get mad and go on a secret crusade with the husband . I hope one day they will finally find out and settle the question .
